Each year, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) reveals their list of the most frequently performed procedures in the past year. They compare this list with past years’ results, to show which facial improvements are on the rise. According to their 2017 data, the procedures below were top choices for patients.
PREJUVENATION UNDER THE AGE OF 30
One of the biggest facial plastic and reconstructive surgery trends is that of people under the age of 30 are seeking procedures to prevent aging. Called prejuvenation, it is a proactive effort to put off lines, wrinkles, and other facial changes, as opposed to waiting for a heftier surgical procedure later on. According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, this younger generation of plastic surgery patients are highly educated and hope to control their own aging.
AAFPRS president William H. Truswell, MD, also a facial plastic surgeon, said, “As more millennials come of age and gain disposable income for aesthetic treatments, [we] have seen steady growth in the demand for cosmetic procedures.”
The reality is that over half of AAFPRS plastic surgeons experienced increases in the number of cosmetic surgeries or injectable procedures provided to patients younger than 30 in 2017. Over 80 percent of these procedures were nonsurgical.
RHINOPLASTY SURGERY STILL RANKS HIGHEST
As in prior years, nose jobs outperformed all other types of facial plastic surgeries in 2017 for 97 percent of AAFPRS members. Most plastic surgeons expect this is because nose improvement can drastically improve facial appearance. Many of these patients struggle with the look or function of their nose for the years leading up to their surgery.
THE AGE OF BOTOX
With aging prevention on their minds, young people seek Botox at earlier ages every year. This neuromodulator and others like it proved most-requested among nonsurgical procedures by all ages in 2017. Results speak for themselves when it comes to putting off aging and improving the look of your face in middle years. Coupled with this is the increase in celebrity mention of using these injectable facial improvements. Botox and other neuromodulators increased in popularity by 33 percent in five years leading up to 2017.
