The Liposuction Procedure

During the liposuction procedure, small incisions will be created in the skin and a small, thin tube called a cannula will be inserted through them. These tubes are moved under the skin to target fat and suction them out. There are multiple techniques used today to perform liposuction.

Tumescent Liposuction

Uses a “wetting solution” which a local anesthetic that is injected during the operation once under anesthesia, causing blood vessels to constrict. This results in less blood loss and reduces post-surgical pain and bleeding.

Suction-Assisted Liposuction

Is the most traditional form of liposuction, and draws fat out using a surgical vacuum.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

Uses ultrasound energy that is transmitted through a special hand piece to loosen and melt fat, allowing a larger area of fat to be treated.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction

Uses a laser to loosen and melt the excess fat for easier fat removal.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

Uses a vacuum to draw the fat out of the body, with the addition of a tool to increase the motion of the cannula for quicker treatment.

The liposuction technique that is best for you can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Cusimano.

What to Expect After a Liposuction

Following your liposuction procedure, you may have tubes to help collect excess fluids. Redness and swelling may occur, and any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Bruising will typically disappear within 7-10 days, while swelling may persist for a few months. Patients usually return to work within a few days of their procedure. Dr. Cusimano will give you specific post-op instructions to follow to ensure optimal results.
